A bit of a wait but the food was worth it. No beer on tap, mainly a wine place, but they do have a decent selection of canned craft beers. Nice classy atmosphere.

Adding to the list of things we didn't think we'd find in northern Iowa - a lovely restored hotel with an attached restaurant that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright (who shall be referred to as FLW from henceforth).

We came over yonder after trying to find a time for a few months. Plenty of upscale price places in town, but this one provided the only chance for such a dinner in THE LAST FLW HOTEL IN THE COUNTRY!

Upon entering the hotel, you're greeted by unique FLW style architecture that elicits at least two feelings 1) This is kinda cool and different, and 2) I feel like I'm on a boat because the ceiling is so low. The entrance to the restaurant is off the lobby, so it's nice to say you were in the hotel.

The restaurant itself is very nice. Continuation of the FLW style, but not claustrophobic - a nice touch. The place seat around 40, so it's worth calling ahead. We sat at the "chef's table" - read the bar next to the grills. Nice to have a chance to talk with the chefs, but not much for ambiance and it makes talking with more than one other person hard. Good once, but we wouldn't do it again.

The beer and wine lists are impressive, boasting no less than 20 harder to come by exotic beers that range from $6-25 per bottle. The wine list is equally impressive - large enough to find something you haven't tried, but not so large that you can't make up your mind. The cocktails were good as well - I had a Smokey Manhattan - excellent and worth trying.

The food here was excellent, and gets a five star bump because of where the place is - it just adds something to the ambiance that's intangible. They serve primarily American favorites - steaks, risotto, fish, chicken etc. We had the meat and cheese tray to start. Prairie breeze is an amazing cheese and went well with the salami and nuts. They serve warm naan with olive oil as the bread - LOVE IT! For the main, my better half had the snapper over cous-cous. It was excellent with just enough kick. I had the mushroom risotto with chicken and it too was excellent - good earth flavor from the mushrooms and really creamy. Ample portions with plenty to share. For dessert, get the crème brulee - the flavors rotate and it was the first time we've had a strawberry crème brulee. Great texture and flavor, served with mascarpone and sliced strawberries, it was a good ending!

Overall, this was a great place to dine and somewhere that anyone up this direction should check out. It'll set you back around $80 for a meal w/ drinks and dessert, and is worth every penny for the experience and the story!

Loved the atmosphere and the service was top notch. However there were some problems. Let me just take you through the meal my husband and I had.
We arrived without a reservation, and were seated almost immediately. Very nice and professional service was had, and our server was prompt and polite throughout the night. We started out with the Spinach Artichoke dip. Bursting with flavors, perfect portion size, loved every bite. At this point we were very excited about our entrees. I had the Grilled Salmon. It was cooked just right, and the risotto was delicate. Over all so far we were looking at 5 star food and service. Now this is where things went a little sideways. My husband had the Chicken Marsala, this comes with a butternut squash puree portobello mushrooms and grilled asparagus, The puree and mushrooms were cooked, seasoned and presented masterfully. My husband doesn't normally enjoy mushrooms and he loved these. Portions of the asparagus were under cooked, but this was acceptable as there were no over cooked portions. However, the chicken itself, which is the star of the plate, was absolutely bland. It didn't matter what he mixed it with on his plate, there was no flavor at all.
We finished the night with creme brulee, which on this night was passion fruit flavored. The brulee tasted wonderful, it was very refreshing and a delight to eat. However parts of the brulee were lukewarm, while other parts were almost frozen which we found very off putting, and the biggest offense of all was the garnish. A dollop of cream with a slice of strawberry, some blueberries and a piece of chocolate. The fruit was a nice touch, but the flavor of the cream conflicted with that of the brulee and could not be eaten in conjunction, and the piece of chocolate had what must have been squid ink making a design on the face of it, and also conflicted with both the cream and the brulee.
Over all a very nice experience, we loved the service, but the food was not up to snuff in certain areas.
